About

When Dr Ashak Nathwani AM first set foot in Australia in 1972, he was a political refugee with just 20 cents in his pocket. Exactly 50 years (to the hour) later, he received his PhD from the school of architecture, design and planning at the University of Sydney. He is now a celebrated engineer with a career spanning over 50 years advocating for energy efficient buildings and best practice approach to green engineering and sustainability.

Ashak has lectured on sustainability, air conditioning, and facilities management for the past 12 years at University of Sydney and co-launched a new postgraduate degree, the Master of Architectural Science – High Performance Buildings. He also co-designed the unique Indoor Environmentally Quality (IEQ) Laboratory at the University, researching comfort, costs, covid and climate change to find the ideal air conditioning system as part of his PhD.

Ashak has authored books namely Forty Years Journey (2012) – Gujarati Migration to Australia (2016) and 50-Year Journey, Australians from Uganda, Tales of Trials, Tribulations & Triumphs (2022). Ashak is also a frequent contributor to articles in various publications by Australian Green Building Council, Fifth Estate, AIRAH, ARBS, and Property Council of Australia.

Between all this, Ashak finds time to volunteer as an energy minimisation strategist with the Aga Khan Development Network. Working primarily in the poorest parts of Asia and Africa, he leads energy and greenhouse gas audits of various types of buildings including places of worship with the goal of achieving net zero by 2030.

In 2016 Ashak was awarded an AM – Member of the Order of Australia – for his achievements and service to sustainability, engineering, and the Ismaili community in Australia.

Buildings and homes account for approximately 40 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change and global warming. Through Mr. CO2 – a personified form of carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases – this book demonstrates how electricity generated from fossil fuels worsens the issue. It offers practical solutions for reducing energy use and cutting associated costs. Embracing energy conservation and minimising carbon emissions should be our guiding principles. Together, we can create net zero buildings without sacrificing indoor comfort. Together, we can defeat Mr. CO2!

Imagine waking up one morning to the startling realization that you have just 90 days to depart from the country of your birth or the place you have long considered your home. Such a life-altering scenario unfolded around fifty years ago in Uganda, where approximately fifty thousand individuals found themselves in this predicament. It was on August 4th, 1972, when the infamous dictator Idi Amin Dada issued a decree mandating the expulsion of Asians, primarily those with origins in the Indian subcontinent, within the stipulated 90-day period, under threat of unspecified consequences. This book serves as a compilation of the stories detailing the trials, tribulations, and eventual triumphs of those who migrated to Australia amidst these extraordinary circumstances.

Gujaratis hailing from India’s Gujarat state are renowned for their industrious and adventurous spirit, evident in their widespread presence across the world. The migration of Gujaratis to Australia began around five decades ago, marking the start of a rich tapestry of narratives from the early settlers. These tales not only captivate but also serve as valuable insights into the preservation, continuation, and perpetuation of cultural and religious traditions. This book offers a comprehensive collection of personal accounts from pioneers and their descendants, illustrating their seamless integration into Australian society while cherishing their cultural heritage.

This marks a significant moment in history, commemorating forty years since the Asian Ugandans made their way to Australia. It signifies a prolonged period since the forced displacement of many migrants from Uganda in 1972, leading them to spend the majority of their lives outside their country of birth. For most, this transition has heralded a fresh start and a promising future. This publication aims to document the experiences of these settlers, encompassing their trials, challenges, and contributions.Through a collection of stories and anecdotes, this book acknowledges the invaluable support and companionship extended by individuals, families, and organizations during the early stages of settlement. Additionally, press clippings serve as a valuable resource, shedding light on the political and social landscapes of both countries during the early 1970
